7 Line Challenge

Many thanks (and cake) to Victoria Pearson for tagging me into this blog-hop thingy. I've never done one of these before and I'm guessing a few people out there will never have seen one before, so, for the uninitiated- here's the deal.

I'm about to post seven lines from page seven of my work in progress... "The Hungry-Man" (squee!). Exciting stuff! BUT then I will tag seven other writers who will, in turn, do the same on their blogs. I suggest you click on the links and check them out.

OK- here goes!

The Hungry-Man

Harvey loves his Mummy; he’d do anything for her. They have a blissful life together, filled with cuddles, walkies and camping trips. Then, one terrible day, everything changes and their perfect life becomes a nightmare. The Hungry-Man wants his Mummy, and only Harvey can save her from a horrifying fate.
Can Harvey do what it will take to protect his Mummy? And will it be enough?
A terrifying and gripping tale of a dog’s devotion and determination to protect those he loves. The next time your dog tries to warn you about something you can’t sense, pay attention…

"Their smell puzzled me; it was upsetting, but I didn’t know why. It made the cats hiss and arch their backs before they sprinted for cover. It made us dogs pant and whine, pace and pull on our leads. It made the brave dogs bark furiously and the more timid dogs do a Wee-Wees when they didn’t mean to. I wondered too at our strong reaction when the people didn’t even see them. They were a mystery and I needed answers. I knew where to go."

Tag! You're it!

The seven lovelies lined up and eager to strut their stuff are:

  1. That's a very evocative seven lines, and so true of animals! I had a dog when I was a kid who used to wet herself, though it happened when we got home from a holiday. Excitement instead of fear.

Regardless, I can see it happening. Thanks for posting.

    1. Thanks for commenting! I'm always so pleased when something I've written rings a bell with someone- feels like I'm on the right track.

I think a lot of people will recognise Harvey's characteristics and behaviours in their own pets and, hopefully, the way the story develops (and what happens at the end) will give them a new way to interpret them. Whether they have nightmares after (as someone did when they read the draft) is another matter...

Is it wrong that I hope they do? (tee hee)

  2. I loved those first few lines - really original idea and I liked that the nervous dogs wee themselves!

Looking forward to reading the whole story :-)

    1. Thank you! That's really kind of you to say (I'm a little in awe because I loved The Listening Post and The Ghost Hunter's Club). I hope you read it (and love it) when it's finished xxx

  3. Sorry to be so slow (I had to beg and plead a bit to gather my seven!). Thanks for tagging me, Louise, and here is the post linking to your site: http://blog.cplesley.com/2013/02/sevenseven-blog-challenge.html

I also enjoyed your snippet. Wishing you all the best with "The Hungry-Man."
